Design position
I believe that graphic design can deconstruct visual codes and thereby make people aware of and question established structures. This design process also leads a designer to remake and reinterpret the context by decomposing features in different layers.

Especially, I wondered about the phenomenon and operating systems of forms such as machines, films and music. I questioned how the structures can be replaced in another form?. Do they still show the key features? or has it changed the function and meaning in a different format? This experiment show how the idea was developed.




This is a visual essay and research-progress video. I believe graphic design can deconstruct visual codes and thereby make people aware of and question established structures. Based on the question, I decomposed features in different layers. This video essay explains my journey and becomes one of the structures of the clock.





Inspiration


Philosophically, adhocism tends to be open-ended like an additive list and encyclopedia. Thus it is first cousin to eclecticism, Defined as “deriving ideas, tastes, style, etc., from various sources”. These quotes engage me, I think about the dissection of structures in graphic communication design.





Research and Thinking Process


Experiment 1  ·············· Seesaw in a graphical notation.


Exploring seesaw and graphic notation. In the mechanical viewpoint, a seesaw has a single pivot point as a lever which is a physical principle of simple machines. This is a fundamental element for visualising the mechanical movement. The graphical notation is a time-based pictographic notation. It represented horizontally from left to right in an abstract graph system. It shows music score in duration, volume and rhythm.

These movements express a Rube-Goldberg machine of 'The breakfast machine' of 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure’  which is a comedy film directed by Tim Burton.








2 Move in Clockwork






Experiment 2 ·············· Clockwork in a graphical notation.


Dissecting features. a clock has various principle motions like energy, wheels, escapements and controllers. After defining the physic movements such as rotating, swing and lever, it displayed the physical scale of the components in five vertical lines which operate simultaneously for one second.

Representing time is important in the complex components. Those of three circles(=wheels) shows detail time.



These movements display Rhythm, Melody and Harmony of music. Also, it allows re-thinking about the ideology of the clock.
What is the clock?. It can be not only showing real-time but also combination and interaction of each gear.





Experiment 3 ·············· The Clock


Over the clockwork, I expanded the research area to the different visual languages of clocks. I divided it as five compositions such as the operating system, materials, form, time-scale, context and medium.

I drew pieces of information about clocks. After breaking down the components, I reassembled it again. I discovered how the form and materials modify the visual code and the information hierarchy. For instance, a component visual size, movement, the amount of information and layout are changed based on the form. This practice helps me to rethink about the demonstrated structure and how it can be altered.
